The Open Source Lab (OSL) offers experiential learning for undergraduate students on real-world open source development and technology projects with organizations including Google, IBM, and Facebook. We work exclusively with open source technology, hosting over 150 projects including key infrastructure projects from the Linux Foundation, the Apache Software Foundation, the Python Software Foundation.
Our student employees receive mentorship from dedicated professionals who encourage and guide the students to take initiative to create, develop, and implement ideas of their own. We also do our best to expand our students' knowledge beyond the lab, gaining different world perspectives by sending them to major open source conferences, such as the Southern California Linux Expo (SCALE), Open Source Summit, and the O'Reilly Open Source Convention (OSCON). The knowledge and skills our students gain from these experiences lead to internships and jobs with companies such as Amazon and Mozilla.
Over ten years ago, CoreOS co-founders Alex Polvi and Brandon Philips were among the first OSL student employees and they attribute the rapid trajectory of their careers to their experiences here. CoreOS is now a leader in software containers, a tool that makes it easier for companies to deliver applications to customers.
“By the time I graduated I had plenty of options all because of the experience at the OSL,” Polvi said.
Help us fund five additional students for the coming year. The OSL depends primarily on donations to fund our student workers--the number of students we can hire and train is dependent on the donations we receive.
We invite you to become part of our rich community of engaged learners and next generation open source leaders. Your donations will give these students the chance at life-changing experiences and opportunities and ultimately help expand the pipeline of graduates with DevOps and open source software experience.
If you would like to become a regular donor for the OSL, please contact us at donations@osuosl.org.
